I am standing in a dark, bleak hallway... my friend Richard is convalescing on the floor after a horrendous snake bite. He'll be okay thanks to the serum... I hope.
I am still holding the golden key that I found downstairs in the dining room. It is decorated with the crest of a golden shield, as if it might somehow defend me from the nightmares I have come against. Creatures that were once people, lusting for my flesh. Wanting nothing more than to sink their horrid, acrid, rotted teeth into my skin and devour me as a dog devours meat. I will have none of it. The tortured screams of my comrades still echo in my ears. I will not be one of those screams...
I still have my .45 with me, and about 10 spare clips of ammunition. Combine this with the Westchester strapped to my back, and I'm a walking arsenal. And what they don't know is that even if these run dry, there's still a whole armory waiting for me at the flick of a finger.
I start forward towards the door at the end of this hallway, leaving Richard in the safe quarters to recover. I pass through the door with ease, into another small hallway. Before me stands a door. Almost monolithic it stands, its very corner lit by the weak lighting that has infested this so-called house. But I can see the keyhole. It's glinting metal lock shows me what I'm looking for: a shield.
As I head towards the stairs, a long, tortured moan echos from down the hall to my left. I turn in time to see another of those abominations ambling towards me. The musty dry and overwhelming stench of rotted flesh is suddenly noticeable in the air as this demon of hell shambles towards me slowly, wanting me for its meal.
I raise my .45 in reply, and fire three shots. BLAM! The first shot hits the monster's shoulder. The bullet plows through the beast, but it remains unhindered. BLAM! This time, I strike the creature's abdomen. Blood and rotted organs spill out of the wound, but it walks as if it has not been hurt at all! BLAM! This time, I hit it square in the head. The bullet does not leave an exit wound. Somehow, the rotted brains of this thing stopped the bullet. I turn and cover my mouth in horror as the thing sinks to its knees, blood gushing out of the new orifices I created for it. Finally, it hits the floor with a loud thud.
Upon returning to reality, I realize that the acrid stench of decay left by this demon still hangs strongly in the air. I go up the small stairway and reach my goal. I produce the golden shield key from my pocket, insert it into the lock on the door, and turn. The key works! Not needing it anymore, I leave it in the lock and proceed forward to investigate further.
I am now in a huge attic. There are gigantic holes in the ceiling, letting in the soft moonlight from outside. The floors are wet and darkened by the rainstorm that stopped only a few minutes ago. There's a shelf a few feet in front of me, but it holds nothing of interest. Bottles filled with miscellaneous chemicals and unimportant powders I know I will never make use of.
I look to the other side of the attic and notice something glinting in the moonlight, almost beckoning to me. It must be what I need to find out the secrets to this horrid mansion. The hallways are dark and cramped, the windows are left open, or are smashed in by creatures like the one I've just dispatched.
I head towards the glowing item, suddenly aware of every step I'm taking. My mind is now processing everything my eyes are seeing. Shadows, changes in my point of view, what is in my field of vision and what isn't. I suddenly feel like a camera attached to a human body, taking footage of this forsaken place of insantiy.
Before I can reach the halfway point between the item and myself though, I hear a loud crash. I jump back in surprise as another abomination pokes its enlongated body through a hole in the roof and stares me down with its huge reptilian eyes. Taking a step back, I realize that this is a giant snake! This must be what bit Richard! It seems too big to take down with my .45, so in an instant, that Westchester on my back is now in my hands, ready to do my bidding.
The snake opens its maw in a massive yawn, its large dripping fangs protruding forward. Shivers fly up and down my spine like mice as it lets out an ear-shattering hiss. Suddenly, I hear the door behind me swing open and then shut. I wheel around, ready to deal with yet another monster, raising my Westchester and starting to squeeze the trigger...
It's Richard! I have no idea how he recovered so fast, but it doesn't matter. He and I stand side by side, ready to fight the reptilian monstrosity. Richard raises his own assault shotgun, and aims it for the monster's overgrown face.
"Payback time!" Richard cries as he unloads a shot into the monster's roaring maw. The creature takes the full force of the blast, and yet is not fazed! Not only have we now invaded its territory to steal its only begotten treasure, but we've now attacked it. Whereas we were only warned to leave this beasts hallowed grounds, we are now its prey. And we're going to fight back.
The huge snake drops its entire length into the attic, shaking the floor. The dry, dusty wood creaks and moans in displeasure, seemingly not able to support the weight it is being forced to carry. However, the floor holds. Richard and I raise our weapons together, ready to take the beast. As it slithers towards us, its roars and hisses deafen my ears. Each time its giant mouth opens, I am reminded of its fangs as they protrude repeatedly with the monsters cries of anger.
The snake stops and raises its head, suddenly. I am keeping my eyes on its head to try and predict its next move. But I didn't know that I had to keep my eyes on the body.
The snake leaps towards me, its dripping maw open as wide as possible. I await the worst and raise my arm in a futile attempt to defend myself...
"Jill!"
Richard cries out my name and dives into me, throwing me out of the path of the giant reptile. Its jaws clamp shut, entrapping Richard. His screams of agony echo throughout the attic, and no doubt the entire mansion as the snake engulfs him and swallows him whole in only four motions.
"Richard!" I scream with futility. I want so much to help him, but I can't. He's got to be dead. I look on the floor and see his shotgun. It packs more power than mine, and I need it. I dive for it, and as the gargantuan snake begins to leap towards me, I take aim with my new weapon and squeeze the trigger...

The night... it comes for me. Watch out... it will come for you too! It swallowed me whole in the night and left me to rot! Images that invaded my mind, a wonderous cacophany of delights, pleasure and wonderful, wonderful madness!
Did it all happen? Was it illusion? Or was it real? Yes. Yes, of course it was! It was!
Those bone thieves... creatures that live inside humans. They burst out, they do! If you hurt them, they burst out! And then they leap onto your skull and drain your blood! Those glowing green heads, which are nothing but swirling green specks of light! And they leap like the mantis! Oh pray to your god that you shall not suffer as I have!
There were many tonight out there in the darkness... they wanted my flesh... my bones... my mind! They disguised themselves as construction workers and sales people. I killed them all, for the bone thieves are in our midst! They shed their human masks and faced me...
And now, now I am in this corner, watching out for everything that the darkness shall try to thrust upon me, but no! I shall succeed.
And then... and then... and... then...
