Travel Log: Egypt, Day Three.
Severe regrets about Day One becoming increasingly common. What the fuck did I do. Still haven’t told Johnathon. ‘Dear Jonny, My first night in Egypt I drank three bottles of Egyptian Pinot Blanc and slept with a stranger. But there’s nothing to worry about, I’ll never see him again!’ is probably not the best way to bring it up. Today I meet my new coworker, generously provided by the organization. Do not want a newbie. I hope they know how to drive a camel. <3 Camryn. Sporting a light pair of sunglasses, desert appropriate clothes, a couple weapons, a map, and her best cheerful attitude, Camryn wrapped up her morning logs and took the first ride over to Point A. All she had to do was wait here at the steps for her new partner. She so rarely got to meet these people before they had to get paired up and do something completely insane. Why was that? Did the organization just LIKE to make things complicated? Or was it easier on the staff when you didn't know your partner well enough to get depressed when they got their brains eaten by zombies, or legs ripped off by dinosaurs? Well, whomever it was (and it better not be a newbie, then she might as well call the whole mission a bust and take bets on how fast they get killed) better get there quick, or she was liable to leave without them. Mummies didn't sleep until the good guys arrived, they went ahead and devour souls without you. [/solid] ==== Masquerade - Jul 30, 2008 at 10:31 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=183] Log, Egypt, Day 3 Beer here is fan-fucking-tastic. Put some weird shit in it that really spices it up. Whiskey, not so much. Import expensive, but generally worth it. Great first night, though. Shaping up to be a good trip. Meet with Jenny soon, don't forget to wear a shirt sans holes. Remember to write in the damn journal with extra expenses or museum will not cover additional ammo + [s]booze[/s] necessary extras. In his least ratty shirt, traveling light with just a set of pistols, a couple knives, and his wallet, Lukas sauntered down the street with his now-ex lover Jenny, who was talking almost nonstop about... well, something. He wasn't really attending, although he did keep an ear out for any potential mention of plausible dangers or 'extras' he could pick up while on the job. The museum paid him well to cover the asses of their premier archaeologists-and-sometimes-grave robbers, but not that well. He could use any bonus they would throw at him. He could imagine the new kid now. Someone small, probably shy. Bookish, probably. All the new ones were. Scrawny... Jenny seemed to be rambling partly about her friend's heinous beau and partly about her experience in the field, which pointed to the kind of close love for the subject matter that normally produced funny-smelling middle-aged women with inkstains on their fingers. Therefore, it was rather a shock to see his 'great first night' sitting patiently on the steps of their meeting place, and for Jenny to hail her familiarly. His polite smile melted into a confident grin as he approached a decent distance behind, giving the excitable Jenny some time to greet her old friend. "This is the guy they're sending out with you this time around. I'm sure I told you about him at some point, Camryn. You asked for a tougher recruit so they asked me to send him over." Jenny beamed and leaned in to whisper in the other girl's ear. "Don't let him drive you crazy. He may be a loud wacko, but he's pretty good." "Lukas Fox at your service, ma'am." He made a show of tipping a hat he didn't have. "Nice to meet you, Miz...?" [/solid] ==== Divinatas - Jul 30, 2008 at 10:49 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=1&pictureid=184]Camryn Camryn was surprised to see Jenny all the way out here, but was elated to see her best friend! Who she wasn't so elated to see was Mister Onenighter, and was pretty damn flabbergasted to find out that this was the freak Jenny had spent hours on the phone complaining about. Oh shit. "Camryn Green." she politely said, at least trying not to have a grim smile as she blinked wide eyed at Jenny, pointing a slow finger in Lukas' direction. "That's the door kicking, man throwing, screaming maniac? He's uh..." Shit. Talk about awkward. "Cammiebear!" And it just got worse. There stepping out of some rundown looking cab, was Johnathon wearing this perfectly ironed white dress shirt with khaki pants. Combed back blond hair, and looking like some sort of English prince as he waved and dashed over. "Are you surprised? Jen said you'd be here this morning, and I thought I'd see my little sweetie off on her newest field trip." Camryn looked at her watch. "Look at the time! You know, I'd just love to go through introductions, but you know, tombs don't explore themselves. I think my coworker and I better get goi-" "Don't be silly, Cammie, there's always time for introductions." said Johnathon, who eyed the other man with a painfully obvious look of distaste. "Johnathon Montgomery, the love of Camryn's life. I say, the organization is really digging deep these days. You hardly look up to Cammie's league." [/solid] ==== Masquerade - Jul 30, 2008 at 10:56 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=183] About to give a playful reply to egg on Jenny's rapidly-spreading blush, Lukas's smile crystallized on his face when John jogged up to them. Not up to her league? Digging deep? Senses alert to trouble, Jen stepped forward a little, giving her most welcoming smile. "Oh, Johnathan, it's been ages since we--" "Cammiebear?" Lukas said, voice dripping with curiosity. He turned to Camryn, the picture of polite interest. "Is that what I should have called you last night?" Whoops. So much for being civil. [/solid] ==== Divinatas - Jul 30, 2008 at 11:11 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=1&pictureid=184]Camryn "Last night? I thought you weren't supposed to meet him until this morning, Cammie?" A curious raised eyebrow as Johnathon stared over at Camryn. Camryn had her hand on her forehead, looking rather sheepish. "Yeah about that. I suppose we met accidentally the other day. But, that was the other day and we have so much work we have to get done an-" "You know, Cammie and I were planning on moving in together. We're practically engaged." Johnathon slipped an arm around her shoulders with a cheeky smile. "Maybe after this little trip, we'll talk about a spring wedding. Jen would be a bridesmaid, right Jen?" Sighing, Camryn looked up at the sky, near praying to god lightning would just strike her down right there! [/solid] ==== Masquerade - Jul 30, 2008 at 11:17 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=183] Jen jumped on the safer topic. "It would be--" "Oho, so because she wants to save on rent by moving into your flat, she wants to marry you? Did you even pop the question yet?" Lukas took a perverse pleasure in the way everyone tensed when he opened his mouth. He was well aware of Jenny's opinion of him, but it hadn't stopped him thus far. He grabbed Camryn's left hand, trying not to think of where exactly it had been when he last saw her, and inspected it. "Funny, no ring. Must be at home with the puppies and solid oak furniture, right? Don't wear it out on trips where riffraff coworkers can see it and be jealous? Hm, but not even a tan line. Is it because you're too cocky to get down on one knee for her, or because she's too embarrassed to let God nor man know she has it?" [/solid] ==== Divinatas - Jul 30, 2008 at 11:30 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=1&pictureid=184]Camryn Camryn snatched her hand away quick and opened her mouth, but not a word came out before Johnathon was already snapping back! "Ah, the reprobate speaks! Oh no, it's all right, Jen. I'm not offended. He's clearly upset to find out my little Cammie is spoken for. See here, man, Camryn and I are doing things exactly as we planned, there's no reason for you to try and embarrass her like this. You'll be working together, after all. Don't want to make things awkward." It was too late for that, she thought. Camryn rest her hands on her hips tapping her fingers against her belt. Considering she was in Egypt could she get away with shooting them both? How bad were the penalties for assault in this country? [/solid] ==== Masquerade - Jul 30, 2008 at 11:35 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=183] Lukas's grin had a little bit of an edge to it. "Not going to let her speak for herself? Not very manly of you. And don't worry too much-- I like my women more vocal." She had certainly been more vocal a few nights ago. "So how about it, Cammiebear? I bet he didn't even get down on one knee for you. Am I right? I've just met you and I already know better than this high-handed dick. Speak up! Don't let this asshole do your deciding for you. Or can you only talk when the men are finished? I see why Jen recommended me." [/solid] ==== Divinatas - Jul 30, 2008 at 11:45 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=1&pictureid=184]Camryn "Just wait a damned minute!" she shouted, resisting the urge to swing a foot out and kick him in the knee, "Screw around with him all you want, but don't go picking on me." Stepping away from Johnathon she gave him an apologetic look. "We've got work to do, so if you're done with the asshattery, Lukas Fox, we better get going." Johnathon, to his credit, let the man's words roll off him like butter! Casting Lukas a smug grin, he blew a kiss at Camryn. "I'll be at your hotel when you get back, sweetie. Don't let this maniac take you for too much of a ride. Think of me!" Camryn waved weakly, mouthing the words I'll call you! at Jenny before she turned tail and walked very very briskly down the street for the vehicle the organization provided. This was going to be the worst week ever. [/solid] ==== Masquerade - Jul 30, 2008 at 11:54 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=183] Lukas ignored Jen's glares as he trailed after Camryn, giving her some breathing space until the others were out of sight. "Hey, if you really like that kind of thing I'll lay off." It was as close to an apology as he would ever get. "I just don't like to see women silent, sort of thing. Not used to it." He shrugged, then scratched at the stubble already hounding his chin. He'd always thought that women were for loving, worshiping, and occasionally getting into yelling matches with. Of course, he knew some wanted to be treated like... well, puppies... but he'd never hopped in bed with one of them. "He's... Uh..." He searched for a polite word, a peace offering of sorts. "...Clean." [/solid] ==== Divinatas - Jul 31, 2008 at 12:07 AM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=1&pictureid=184]Camryn "Oh Christ." Camryn muttered rolling her eyes before she turned around to walk backwards as she scowled at him. "Jen told me all about you. Shooting your damned mouth off at everything, there was no way in hell I was stepping in the middle of that. Besides, he's a grown man and can defend himself." Stopping at the jeep, she pulled a pair of keys out of her pocket and held them out as she leaned against the side. "Hate him all you want. Sock him in the face if that floats your boat. But I'd really appreciate it if we kept our little, uh, night a secret. I'm not sure how Jenny will take it..." [/solid] ==== Masquerade - Jul 31, 2008 at 12:26 AM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=183] He took the keys from her and couldn't quite keep the smirk off his face. He opened the door for her before hopping in and starting the engine. They'd need to stop before leaving the city to pick up a few supplies he had set aside, but other than that it would be as smooth a ride as he could muster. "It was about you, in case you hadn't noticed. And don't worry about Jenny. We're over it. Works out better this way. She helps me get the more interesting jobs and I don't let her down. More than I can say for our romantic lives." He pulled over to a fairly nondescript building at the edge of the city proper and hopped out, delaying any replies. He came back a few minutes later with help, all toting sacks or cases of some kind. In a matter of minutes they were stocked, Lukas had a shotgun comfortably close at hand, and they were off again. "Map," he reminded her. He kept one eye on the road and one eye on her as he lit up a cigarette with some difficulty. She wasn't bad even sober. He liked the way she moved, especially when she was irritated... But that wasn't really his territory, was it? That was the ground of some rich, foppish 'bloke' in sandals and a cardigan. He exhaled and shifted to a more comfortable position, moving his holsters around until they sat right. "I can keep a secret if it needs keepin'. It was that bad, huh?" He hadn't remembered it being bad, but you never knew. She'd seemed to enjoy it at the time, but sometimes you couldn't tell with women. And here he'd prided himself on being able to spot a fake. [/solid] ==== Divinatas - Jul 31, 2008 at 12:49 AM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=1&pictureid=184]Camryn Camryn wasn't so sure about Jenny. There's things you don't do to your friends, and sleeping with their ex (even if it was an accident) is one of them! And she sure didn't mention a thing about how great he was in be-! That was not what she needed to be thinking about, right now! They were going to work, it was time to be focused and serious. Refraining from rolling her eyes as she flipped open the map and directed him off towards the west, Camryn did laugh when he asked if it was that bad! "Worried, huh? And here I thought you were right confident about what you could do." Camryn graced him with a wicked smirk. She told herself it wasn't flirting, it was teasing. There was a very distinct difference. [/solid] ==== Masquerade - Jul 31, 2008 at 3:47 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=183]Lukas He resisted the urge to shift in his seat again. If he did, his particular uncomfortability would soon make itself known, and it looked like, now that she wasn't around her prospective fiance, she didn't need any extra ammunition against him. "Huh. Well, you weren't complaining before, but it could be that you're thinking about it differently now that your Johnathan is back in the picture." He brooded on this a minute while he frowned at the expanse of sand and the poor excuse for a road. He knew very little about where they were going and what they would be doing, but that was what she was there for. His only job was to keep outside interference to a minimum. He wondered if she was really worried about Jenny. Maybe she wouldn't be if they'd had longer to talk to each other-- he knew for a fact she was seeing some sleek-looking Italian fellow who she claimed had a better command of romance than he did of English. He'd been offended at first, but after meeting the guy he couldn't really hold a grudge. It helped that Sergio or Giorgio or what whatever his name was had bought enough rounds to prove he could drink Lukas under. Plus, he made Jenny happy, which was more than Lukas could say about himself. Call him territorial (most of his exes did) but he wasn't the love and leave type. Well, he was, but in a caring kind of way. Aargh. All this thinking was pissing him off. Unbeknownst to him, his expression darkened in a scowl. He wasn't usually the introspective type... this female was probably fucking with his head somehow. Mind games or something. The job. Just focus on the job. [/solid] ==== Divinatas - Jul 31, 2008 at 4:12 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=1&pictureid=184]Camryn Camryn leaned an arm on the jeep door, pointing him off down another road. Her smiled turned less wicked and more apologetically embarrassed as she rubbed her forehead. "The other day was... out of hand. Too much Pinot Blanc and not enough thinking. I should have at least asked your damned name first." Then she wouldn't have screwed around with her best friend's ex, no matter how damned good looking he was with that halfass shave. Johnathon was all smooth with soft skin, that at first she thought was oh-so-prettyboy, but now it was sort of like dating a high maintenance woman. ...This was SO not keeping her mind on the job. Casting a look over at Lukas, she blinked! Well, at least she wasn't the only one getting lost in lalaland! "That last road on the right is the one that leads off to the tombs. I hope you like mummies. We have the pleasure of setting off every trap in the place, breaking up a curse and making the place safe for an official team." [/solid] ==== Masquerade - Jul 31, 2008 at 4:41 PM [solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=183]Lukas Haha, funny. Well, nothing could kill a boner like the sudden and very vivid mental image of a rotting thousand-year-old corpse. At least he was spared that much. "Don't worry about the traps. Those I can take care of. But who the hell believes in curses these days anyway? Don't tell me you're one of those superstitious types." He'd seen it happen before, but this was usually the result of too many years in the field. Weird things were bound to happen when robbing very old tombs in unstable conditions, but in his experience a streak of bad luck did not a curse make.

Log, Egypt, Day 6

Naturally, boring as hell. Spent a lot of time following girl around and listening to gibberish about runes or hieroglyphs or whatever. Finally made headway to some kind of hall. Should have brought something to drink.

What he hated most about his job was the waiting and being bored. They hadn’t come across any traps. No robbers, no nosy journalists, no crazed religious locals or even so much as an overly-curious jackal had bothered them yet. All there was to do was poke his head into a sandy chamber to look halfheartedly for evidence of traps, then retreat while Camryn poked around more thoroughly, and bone up on his hieroglyphics. The former he did once every few hours if he was lucky, and the latter was becoming rapidly dull. He used the walls as practicum, mumbling to himself as he ferreted out the meanings of words and occasionally throwing the dog-eared book to the ground in disgust before stomping off to sulk and clean his gear of sand.

“Anything yet?” He wasn’t expecting much of a reply, but the symbols of birds and reeds and feathers were starting to blur on the page. He needed a break.

Travel Log: Egypt, Day Six
I haven’t seen a puzzle this complicated in ages. Two pieces have been deciphered, one left to go. That man is nothing but a distraction. Note to self – find him a less distracting pair of pants to wear.

“Not since you asked me fifteen minutes ago.” Camryn said easily, as she was crouched near the floor reading over a line of hieroglyphs on the wall. She scribbled down the translation on the notebook in an odd sort of pattern. Drawing a few circles to connect the lines to the ones she had previously written down, Camryn frowned as she eyed it. It was so close. There was a hidden door on this wall for sure, but figuring out which spot open the door and not the big sandtrap over their heads was really complicated. It didn’t help that part of the phrase had been worn away. Now it was guesswork.

“Do you like to gamble, Lukas?” Camryn didn’t wait for his reply as she stood up, running her hand across the wall. One, two, three… this one. She pressed against the wall, glancing up quickly to see if sand was going to start pouring from the ceiling, but was rewarded with the much less deadly sound of stone grinding against stone as the wall pushed backwards slowly. Plumes of dust and that old musty smell of long rotted things poofed from the cracks, revealing a dark cobwebbed tunnel. Camryn flashed Lukas a self satisfied smirk!

[solid=http://space-kitten.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=183]Lukas

He shut his book in a sharp motion, tucking it into a pocket before hefting one of the many bags strewn around him. “I gamble,” was all he said as he passed by her. She looked a lot better when she was smiling instead of giving him that smug smirk, but he didn’t voice that bit. He loosened his thin shirt still more– the next chamber was hot and the air stale. Lantern in hand, he forged ahead, inspecting the walls, floor, and ceiling carefully.

Something about the pattern… there. Checking to make sure that Camryn was as far back as she ought to be, he knelt to inspect the floor. He dragged a rag loosely across the floor until it snagged, and frowned. His own boots were steel-reinforced, but to an ancient Egyptian wearing (at best) sandals made of rushes, this would have been nasty. Even in the modern day, a thinning sole might have stepped on this, and he was willing to bet it had been poisoned. He didn’t know if ancient poisons would work this long, but he wasn’t really willing to find out. He stood up and crushed one underfoot, hearing a satisfying crunch, and trailed the rag around in a long, sweeping arc. Chalk marked the safe zones for now.

He was concentrating mostly on marking hard enough to be seen but not hard enough to do damage (he’d been berated enough in the past) and wondering if he could pry up one of the long needles in the ground and send it back for analysis, so he didn’t notice the subtle change in the wall markings until it was almost too late.

Fortunately, either luck or instinct was still with him, so when he heard the first creak to his left, he dropped both his lamp and the chalk and dove into a roll.

One! Two! Three! arrows zipped past, but he had the sinking feeling that he wasn’t clear yet. He launched himself forward again, trying to keep up his momentum, and a fourth and fifth arrow barely missed him. It was the sixth that would have done him in, but age hadn’t been as kind to the last arrow as it had been to the rest. The mechanism snapped and the arrow’s flight skimmed the surrounding stones, making it explode into shards as Lukas ducked, trying to cover his face.

He hit the floor with a painful thud, feeling his injuries in a very distant way. The arrowhead had embedded itself in his shoulder instead, and thick splinters pinned his clothes down to his skin, but he was gloriously alive and besides, it wasn’t anything a little antiseptic wouldn’t fix. He sat up carefully, trying not to force any of the splinters in deeper, and stared at the dark patch of blood dripping down his right arm.

Silence reigned for a long moment, then he down the hall at Camryn and broke out into a huge smile. “Look– the damn lantern’s still going. They don’t skimp on the fucking equipment, do they?” And he laughed, relief and exhilaration sweeping through him as his voice echoed faintly.

Damn he loved his job.

“Well, shit, Lukas!” she exclaimed, standing there for a moment resting her hands on her hips and blinking down the tunnel with a dumbfounded expression. As soon as she heard that click, it was her personal experience that kept her from dashing forward trying to pull some crazy rescue. Having them both get killed wasn’t going to help anybody.

“Do I need to take you back to camp and fix you before we go down any further, or do you think you’re gonna live?” Camryn tried not to smile back him, as she followed the chalk marks around the traps on the floor. He didn’t deserve a smile, he about got himself killed! Stopping next to the lantern, she picked it up along with the chalk. Eying the wall, she drew a circle around a particular glyph, and adjusted what looked like a stone lever. There was a bit of creaking in the walls as the trap disabled.

He was still chuckling as he pulled splinters as long as his fingers from his side and arm. Luckily, nothing had sunk deep enough to puncture anything vital, like a lung or an artery, so it was more of an inconvenience than anything.

“I’ll live. Gimme a second to clean up. Next team’ll have my hide if I bleed all over their historical floors.” He frowned at a particularly stubborn shard of wood as he fingers slipped in his own blood, making it hard to remove. He leaned back a little to try and see where the arrowhead had entered, just to the side of his harness strap.

“Go get the first aid kit in the other room,” he ordered, still distracted by his predicament. He could take off the harness, but that would mean he would have to get any splinters out of his back first, or he could well push them further in. Or he could try to work around it…

He felt the metal bite into his probing finger, releasing more blood onto the already-slick surface, and cursed. Jerking back made the harness pinch the wound, which only made matters worse, and in a matter of moments he was alternately spewing lively swears and grinning, still high on adrenaline.

Camryn fetched the kit from the other room in record time, and knelt down next to him. He was cursing yet grinning, and Camryn found it impossible to keep herself from smiling as she pushed up her sleeves. She placed a hand just above his uninjured shoulder at the neck to keep him still, as she flipped open the kit and dug around for that large pair of tweezers.

“How about you stop squirming for a second.” Camryn made quick work of the smaller splitters, plucking them out with ease. She brushed her thumb softly on his neck, cleverly trying to keep him distracted as she pulled that final larger spike out. There was a frown on her face as she tried to be delicate about it, and when it was finally out she was pressing the wound with some gauze immediately.

“Lucky baby..” she muttered under her breath. Camryn caught another glimpse of that grin again, and with extreme difficulty forced herself to focus on cleaning his wound rather than looking at his mouth. If he didn’t cut that out, she might start getting some bad ideas.

“Yesterday I was a loudmouthed embarrassment and today I’m your baby?” His smiled tightened for a moment as she yanked the arrowhead out of his shoulder– she couldn’t be nicer about it?– and he tried to watch without getting in her way. She fumbled around his harness, and with the smaller splinters removed it was only getting in the way of proper care. He had no intention of getting an infection and going home early, so he swiped his fingers on his ruined shirt before grabbing her hand.

“Hold on a second.” He removed the harness, putting it so his weapons would still be within easy reach, and fumbled at his shirt’s buttons one-handed. It would be easier to put on a tight bandage underneath his clothes than over them.

“You’re still a loudmouthed embarrassment.” Camryn muttered. She watched as he fumbled to unbutton his shirt, before she pulled her hand from his and went about unbuttoning herself. Mumbling something about it being the second time this week, Camryn pushed his shirt off his shoulders. Realizing she had lingering hands, she was quickly digging in the kit for some more gauze and the bottle of antiseptic.

Camryn didn’t warn him before she poured a bit of the antiseptic over the wound, catching the excess with the gauze. But she leaned forward rather close to blow on it, and relieve the sting. He smelled like blood, sweat, and that faint scent or soap or cologne that she hard particularly liked when she first met him. There was a peculiar look across her face as she struggled to push some of those thoughts aside and stick to the present!

He barely winced as the antiseptic hit his open wound, and found it somewhat amusing that she felt she needed to ease the sting as if he were 5 instead of 25. He had to admit, though, that whether it was being several pounds lighter or several degrees cooler or that the traces of adrenaline hadn’t quite left his system, he was feeling a lot better.

He was willing to bet that she hadn’t realized that her top was dipping graciously low and giving him a tantalizing reminder of his first evening in Egypt. He cleared his throat to get her to look up, as down was about to become very embarrassing in about another minute.

“Actually, it looks like I’ll probably need stitches there.” There were probably some in the bag, and anyway he wouldn’t need many. The wound wasn’t large– just deep. “But keep putting pressure on it for now.” He placed a hand firmly over hers to hold her in place, inadvertently jerking her a little closer.

…Next thing he knew, his free hand was cupping her cheek and he was kissing her.

Oh boy. This wasn’t what she wanted. Well, was was- No it wasn’t! Yet Camryn wasn’t moving away like she was telling herself to do. She was leaning forward returning his kiss, other hand sliding down over his chest.

At some point she must have come to her senses, as Camryn quickly leaned back at arm’s length, still holding pressure to that wound, but holding herself at a distance. “Whaooo. Okay. Very bad.” She held up a finger twirling a circle in the air. “Tomb traps, not a good idea. Hrm…” She moved forward again to brush her mouth against his, before she caught herself and sat straight again. “Jesus Christ… We’re done! Going back to camp and sewing you up.” Camryn fumbled in to the kit for some tape to make sure he had a temporary bandage. Her hand was shaking, and she was muttering every curse word known to man under her breath.

Damn she knew how to kiss. That much hadn’t changed.

“There might be something in the kit, if you don’t want to stop early.” His gaze had a predatory glint to it, and his voice was just a little rougher. But she wasn’t listening anymore. He wanted to growl with frustration, but kept it in check. He needed a new shirt anyway.

Slipping a hand under hers, he disengaged her hand from his shoulder, kissing her fingertips before he let her go. “Let’s go then.” He picked up his harness and slung it over his shoulder, followed by his shirt, before she could protest and nodded back at the way they came in. They day was almost over anyway, and if she led with the light he’d be able to walk things off before she could tease. His high over and no promise of new excitement to come, he was starting to feel more irritable and tired and altogether not fond of being made fun of.

Ignoring that tingling feeling, Camryn snatched up the kit and the lantern and got to her feet. She led the way down the tunnel, stepping around the traps on the floor, back through the chambers they had opened up and cleared the days before and out in to the open where their camp laid just outside. There was still a good couple hours before the sun set, leaving plenty of time to make sure Lukas Fox wasn’t going to bleed to death or die from infection.

At least that was what she was trying to keep herself focused on. Injured man, mummy tombs, best friend, boyfriends! Christ, she didn’t even have any booze in her to use as an excuse! It was his own damned fault for being kissable. That should be a crime.

Setting aside the first aid kit, Camryn was digging out some clean water. “We’ll have to wash all that blood off, and then I’ll see about patching you up. That tunnel should lead down to the last chamber, so maybe by tomorrow you’ll get a real doctor to look at you.” For the moment she was trying not to look at him, which was getting ridiculous as she was going to have to if she were gonna take care of that wound.

He set his things down first, leaving a pistol near at hand, before sitting on top of a few crates with a groan. Great, now he was feeling it. He tried to keep sitting up straight, but to be honest all he wanted to do was lie down, maybe have a drink…

Speaking of drinks. He dragged his bag back over with the toe of his boot, popping the strap up so he could catch it. Rummaging through, he ignored Camryn’s efforts to drag over a water bucket in favor of…

Aha. Opening the small flask was harder than he reckoned for, since the heat had expanded the metal, but that just made it better. Liquid fire ran down his throat and, a few generous swallows later, he was just numb enough to deal with watching a needle stab in and out of his flesh. Not that he couldn’t do it sober, but what was the fun in that? Another rummage brought up his snack– the last apple, swiped right before breakfast so he’d have something to munch on in his long hours of waiting. He bit in, the slightly dehydrated flesh nonetheless tasting very, very sweet.

“You want some?” he asked around a mouthful. He swallowed before biting in again partway, peeling back a generous hunk with his teeth. He held it half in his mouth, offering it to her generously but with a wicked smile on his face. The rest of the apple he held surreptitiously just out of reach, so she would take his point.

He wasn’t being very professional, so he wouldn’t be surprised if she slapped him in reply. But unless he was very much mistaken, she’d been giving him unprofessional looks all day.

“Well, I see you’ve found yourself some painkiller.” Though her comment was sarcastic her smile was genuinely amused. Camryn had dragged over a good deal of water and was ringing out a cloth rag. She wasn’t moving to take the bait just yet, but instead moving to clean the blood from his shoulder and arm. And while she was at it, there was no reason why she couldn’t make sure there was no blood on his back or chest. She WAS going to have to secure the bandage around him.

Clearly, Camryn had no control over herself. What was she, 16? As an adult and a professional, and as someone else’s girlfriend, she shouldn’t even be remotely entertained by the man. Especially when there wasn’t even an ounce of liquor in her. She leaned over to rinse out of the cloth.

“You’re getting my pants wet.” He bit the piece in his mouth in half, catching it neatly. He popped it into her mouth with a grin, then clamped down on the rest of the apple to free his hands.

“Arrl guft aake en auff,” he mumbled around the fruit, already undoing the button to his pants. The water was soaking into the waistband and making them chafe– there was no sense in wearing uncomfortable pants on top of everything else, so he was loosening them a bit. It wasn’t like he was going to expose himself.

And if he did, it wasn’t like it wouldn’t be anything she hadn’t seen before.

Camryn’s reply to his wet pants was much much too dirty for any woman to say out loud. Chewing that piece of apple slowly, she rest a hand on her hip and watched him with a raised eyebrow. Quite blatantly even, half wondering if he’d just go ahead and take those pants off or if he was getting a kick out of teasing her and seeing how red her face would get. …she wasn’t flushing was she?

Brushing the back of her hand against her forehead, Camryn decided the man was a witch. A dirty rotten male witch, with crazy hypno eyes. What the hell was Jenny thinking. Drapping the wet cloth over her shoulder, Camryn pulled out a dry one.

“Poor darlin’. Nearly shot dead and you’re all wet. You got something else to complain out?” She cast him a smile, draping that towel over his head. “I hope you’re not afraid of needles. Would be a shame if I had to tie you up first.”

He glared at her for the sake of appearances, but took another casual bite out of his apple. “Nope. I’ve been wondering when you were gonna stitch me up. Or were you going to let me bleed slowly to death while you ogled my assets?” It was probably a poor idea to tease the person who was going to take sharp objects to your skin, but if she did a purposely bad job on his shoulder it would come back to bite her in the ass.

Her very nice, firm ass.

And he hoped she knew that. The bit about doing a good job with the stitches, not the bit about her ass.

“Relax.” He ruffled the towel through his hair, sighing gratefully as the motion and the shade, together with the fact that the sun was setting quickly, helped to cool and refresh him. Comparatively speaking, he was getting the royal treatment today. “You’re watching me like I’m a fox in a hen-house.” He pulled at face at the unintentional pun. “I won’t bite ‘less you want me to.”

Laughing softly, Camryn sterilized that needle and thread. “It’s not you I’m worried about. At the moment, you should be thinking me biting you.” She didn’t mean that literally (…okay, maybe she did, but she didn’t WANT to mean that literally!), and showed him the needle, before carefully tending to his wound. She was quick, but gentle. It was obvious that she’d had plenty of practice at sewing people up before.

Luckily, it only took a few stitches before she tied and cut the stitching. Camryn pulled out the gauze and tape to cover up the wound, then it was time for the roll of bandage. She had to move herself close just to wrap it securely, and when she was done she didn’t seem to quick to move away. In fact Camryn didn’t move away at all, but found herself leaning and brushing a soft kiss at the corner of his mouth.

“You’re all set, Fox.”

Startled at the teasing hint of a kiss, he distracted himself by checking to make sure the bandaging settled properly. She was good, he had to admit: it was snug without being constricting. It was the work of a moment, but he’d already made up his mind.

“Thank you, Miz Green.” He slipped his hand under her chin, tilted her face up, and kissed her, taking full advantage of being able to use both arms now.

He kissed her tentatively at first, making sure she wouldn’t do anything like punch his shoulder (which would end badly) or shove him (which could get embarrassing). When she didn’t do either, he settled for a longer, lingering crush of their lips and let a hand wander to her hip, where he could steady her properly. His thumb stroked the exposed skin just above her waistband and he smiled a little, pulling back just far enough to make her work for the next one.

If she wanted it.

Damn he hoped she wanted it.

Chewing on her bottom lip, she slid her body between his knees, running one of her hands up his leg, and the other to gently tug his ear until his face was eye level with hers. “I don’t suppose it makes a difference how many times you fool around, once you’ve already done it.” Camryn muttered softly, before giving a devious grin. “But being wounded and all, you probably want to get straight to bed.”

He shook the sand off his harness, slinging it loosely over his shoulders, and enjoyed the view of her back. Part of him wanted to snicker– her bra was a very impractical lacy white. Definitely not something he’d pick as an archaeologist, but in a way, it was cute of her. And, of course, she had to have been hoping for something to wear a bra like that.

She was slow getting into her tent, so it was easy for him to burst in after her and sweep her– literally– off her feet. She was heavier than she looked, but he could tell that most of it was muscle, completely at odds with the girly undergarments. His pants were making a hindrance of themselves, threatening to fall off his narrow hips. That was easily solved.

In an amazing feat that pulled rather painfully at his stitches (crap, forgot those were there), he swung her around as if she were a child until she could straddle his waist, and supported her with one arm firmly bracing her ass and back. Grinning, he tapped her legs, which were still pinning his pants to him.

“You’re gonna have to move these up more, or I’ll trip on my pants.”

“Mind your stitches.” she muttered. It was hard to put on that stern expression when all she wanted to do was laugh and throw her arms around his neck. He was pretty damned strong to tossed her around like that. Johnathon’s body was all show and no strength to back it up. But her boyfriend wasn’t the one she was thinking about at the moment.

Camryn slid one arm around his neck, opposite of that shoulder of his, to keep herself braced. “Now, Lukas, a wiser man would have taken them pants off first.” Shifting, she moved herself to deal with those pants, finding it hard to pull herself up just right without catching his shoulder. He might not be worried about those stiches, but she wasn’t keen on sewing him up twice in one day.

Of course taking her time did give her the opportunity to sneak a kiss or three. She wasn’t counting.

He wasn’t opposed to a kiss or three… or four… or… ten? Ah, who cared. This was even better when he wasn’t completely inebriated, and wound or not he was enjoying himself thoroughly. It was worth risking tetanus from ancient arrowheads if this was the result.

Some creative wriggling that brought entirely too much of them together seemed to make her just as impatient as he was, and it took much too long for his liking to get the damn things off and sailing merrily out of the tent flap. He feigned throwing her down, breaking her fall enough so that it was mostly rush and little impact, and wasted no time in grabbing her pants by the waistband, jerking them halfway down her hips before he realized he’d need to unzip them as well or else risk ripping through the seams. Muttering curses under his breath, he fumbled for the zipper, her fingers wreaking havoc on his senses….

When he realized that he never heard the thump of his pants hitting the ground. Without rolling off her, he grabbed the closest gun and pointed it at the door, shoving her just behind him as he turned.

A man wearing a dusty cloth mask aimed a shotgun at the pair, eyes crinkling as if grinning at the free show. Lukas dragged a blanket over to cover Camryn, scowling.

“#*)@&%^ *@!(% &!#$&@.”

Lukas leaned a bit more towards the archaeologist. “You have any idea what he just said to us?” he whispered. He was guessing it wasn’t friendly, but a man had to know before he went shooting the natives.

Have gotten shot. Knew this would happen. Damn bandits. Killed three of them in self-defense. Also discovered camp, containing several artifacts that the good researcher thought would be much safer with her. Not sure why, because she failed to fire more than a single shot during the firefight. Then again, lady didn’t get shot either.

Found a new chamber today. Funky beetles lacquered and stuck into walls. Getting a bad feeling…

“Do you know how hard it is to hold something up in exactly this position for a half hour solid?” Lukas complained. Camryn had insisted that the lamp had to be held steady just above shoulder height, and the strain was starting to tell on Lukas’s bad shoulder. He switched hands, making the hieroglyphics tilt and swirl dizzily.

“Won’t the generator light do?”

Travel Log: Egypt Day Eight
Fucking Lukas Fox. No really, that would be NICE. God damned grave robbing bandits. An arrow wound and a gunshot wound, we must keep our hands to our self, Camryn Green, or we’re going to kill our new partner. …He’d die happy, at least.

Found the last chamber and the wall is covered in scarabs. This last trap should spring the curse up. I love my job.

Camryn had to pause as he switched hands with the light. “The generator light kills all of the shadow. I need those shadows.”

The great thing about being an official trap deactivator was trying to figure out what sort of traps you were coming across. This wall of scarabs could go in so many interesting and deadly combinations, that she really didn’t want to rush the process and end up with another mess like yesterday.

Why she wanted to keep Lukas Fox from getting more damage wasn’t nearly as saintly as it might have sounded.

Today she had some twine, and was trying to measure the distances between scarab positions and the shadows the lantern cast on the walls. She had Lukas standing at the ideal point in the center of the chamber and as soon as she had the math down, one of these scarabs was going to open up the tomb.

All the others would open up untimely death.

” …Now keep it still or I’m going to be stuck at this all night.”

“We’ve already been at this all night.” Lukas grit his teeth and forced his arm to hold still again. “Next time, I’ll play with the ball of yarn and you can hold the old-fashioned oil lantern made of brass.” It really didn’t help that Camryn’s back was to him, showing off her extremely attractive derriere. It should be criminal to dress in pants that tight when on the clock. In an attempt to distract himself, Lukas allowed his gaze to meander around the room.

“Ah, shit.” Apparently his wound hadn’t appreciated the strain, and was beginning to bleed through. The slightly grimy bandage around his muscular arm was slowly turning red. At least it didn’t hurt, but he didn’t need any more scars. While not vain, Lukas wasn’t eager to lose the good looks God had given him. “I hope you’re happy. You like seeing my blood on the floor, don’t you?”

He eyed the hieroglyphics on the wall and fished in one pocket for the book he’d been studying for the past week. “Does that thing mention being buried in the earth?” he asked suspiciously. He scanned the ceiling above his head. Yup. That star-shaped tile precisely above his head was a good point to start a crumbling cave-in of death. “You’d better pick the right beetle, lady.”

“You’re moo-ving.” she replied in a sing-song voice. When she was done measuring the space in between the scarabs on the wall, she wrapped the twine back and tucked it in her pocket. Camryn chanced a look over her shoulder. That look he got on his face when he was cross about something was so…! Argh, there she went again. The man was bleeding through his damned bandages, there was a tomb to get in to…

and not to mention she had a damned boyfriend!

Camryn blew her hair out her face. “Oh yeah? Let’s see if my calculations are right.” she didn’t give him a chance to reply, when she pointed at a few of the pieces on the wall and finally hovered over one. She pressed it, the little black piece moving backwards in to the stone. She looked back at the star over Lukas’ head – just in case.

Nothing happened at first. She had to admit, she was relieved when one of the pillars start rolling to the side to reveal a new passageway instead of dropping down tons of sand on their heads.

“There we go. This should be our cursed tomb. Keep an eye out for demons.”

”Isn’t it mummies we should watch out for? Demons are kind of a Christian thing, aren’t they? Or Greek, maybe.”

That was what he meant to say. What came out was: “Isn’t it mummies we shoul– FUCK, RUN!”

The pillar began to close slowly as the ceiling began to retract. Cascades of sand poured in from above them, and Lukas barely had the presence of mind to grab the lantern before he ran at Camryn. Stooping low as he bolted past her, he caught her none-too-gently by the waist and slung her over his shoulder as he dove for the closing passageway. The walls of the corridor were narrowing as well, and he was forced to throw Camryn into the room ahead before slipping sideways and barely making it out of the terrible Hallway of Doom (okay, so it sounded better in his head) before it ground tightly shut.

Panting, he leaned against the warm, now-tightly-shut walls to catching his breath. Feeling a tug, he looked to the side. A frayed end of the rope he kept slung across his torso disappeared into the wall.

Feeling suddenly elated, he began to laugh.

Camryn coughed. She cast Lukas an examining look, before she turned around to inspect the tomb. There was the big stone chest that should hold the mummy, and several smaller ones that likely held other valuables and artifacts. These things were supposed to be left untouched for the others to catalog and examine. Haha, if they died here in a few years someone else was going to be digging them up!

Suddenly there was a weird grinding sound. Alarmed, Lukas eyed the walls, and then the ceiling. But it went on and on, and nothing was moving. Or was it?

Okay. Lukas had never been a superstitious man, but some things were just too creepy. In all probability, the large, ominous stone tomb in the middle of the room was sliding the one-ton lid off itself because of a series of ancient and quite miraculous mechanics invented to deter pious would-be robbers. But it was damn creepy nonetheless.

“‘Fraid that it is, gunslinger.” she responded, very slowly taking a few steps backwards from the moving stone. Maybe Lukas Fox didn’t believe in ancient hocus pocus, but this was her specialty. Only… this was also why she went through partners like she changed her underwear!

“This isn’t good.” she mumbled softly, taking a second really fast look around. Usually there was a way to back out, run, or at least get some distance so you could fire off guns without getting yourself mauled in the process! But they were sealed in, and that thing wasn’t going to be happy about his nap getting cut short.

Maybe he’d wake up in a good mood!

”Uuunngg…”

Nevermind. The top of the sarcophagus fell off with a loud THUD and much to her displeasure a gnarled hand was moving up and gripping the edge. Giving leverage for the body to sit up from his bed. How did those things even move after being so old?! Camryn reached behind her to pull a small gun. “You’re the PhD. Any ideas? Maybe you can talk it down in ancient mummy-speak?” He was trying to decide if a grenade was a good idea in such close quarters. He did have a couple on hand…

“Depends on the mummy.” Camryn replied, with that higher pitched tone. She didn’t exactly have the time to read over the hieroglyphs and get a better idea! Before she could give way to panic, her eyes fell on some distortions between the walls. That was going to be a way out! Camryn shifted behind Lukas, running her hands along one of the inconspicuous cracks until her fingers found something that jutted out from the stone. Praying it was just the lever they need, she forced her weight on it until it pushed down.

There was the familiar grinding of stone, followed by the floor beneath their feet suddenly started to shift. From the center of the room pieces of the floor were now moving away from each other, disappearing underneath the walls.

On the bright side, the mummy that had crawled out of his tomb was moving farther away. …on the other hand, they were quickly running out of floor.

“I’m not one to be pessimistic, but just in case.” Lukas pushed Camryn hard up against the cool stone wall and kissed her deeply. He melded his hard, masculine body against her and kissed for as much as he was worth, savoring her sweet feminine taste.

Just as the floor was about to crumble from out of underneath them, the wall behind Camryn began to move! They all but fell in, what with Lukas putting his weight on her and all. The new room was dark and dusty and very, very still.

“Lucky us.”

This was possibly the best way to die in the entire universe. Having Lukas pressed against her, and getting to return his kiss with no care in the world about mummies, bottomless pits or-

OOMPH~! Argh, fuck! That landing was a little rough, but they were alive and not falling to their doom. That sounded pretty damned awesome.

“I hate you so much.” she muttered through her teeth, though her actions were the complete opposite. Camryn grabbed his head in no gentle fashion to pull him down for another hard kiss! “Told you we’d get out.”

He kissed back, then moved to nibble at the sensitive skin of her neck. “Mmm-hmm,” he mumbled, his mouth full of her flesh. “Won’ doubt you again, boss.”

He growled needily at her and managed to drop his packs beside them with a muffled thump. One of his hands crawled up her shirt suggestively. He wasn’t even complaining about her saying ‘I told you so’!

There was a soft hiss of her breath as his teeth nipped in to her skin, but there seemed to be no complaint from her. The brief thought of ’This is so wrong.' caught her mind only for a fraction of a second, replaced by the much more delicious feelings of relief and excitement.

Camryn shifted underneath him, only to move her hands between them to pull loose the buttons of his shirt. With the last button free, she was pushing it off his shoulders to graze her hands appreciatively over the expanse of tone muscle. Taking her time was definitely not on her agenda, as she curled her fingers in to his hair and tugged him up to take his mouth with hers!

If there was anyone would could appreciate a forward woman, it was Lukas Fox. It meant that he didn’t have to worry too much about all that weird snuggling and crap that most women wanted. And there was something just plain hot about a girl who knew what she was looking for. Far be it for him to stop her.

In fact, screw shirts. Not literally. He was saving that for something else. He gave up as he fumbled off her second shirt button and slid one hand between them to force the buttons off her pants. He rubbed his face shamelessly between what was exposed of her breasts, his stubble scraping roughly against her skin. He made satisfied noises as he caressed her hips– he’d been wanting to do that for some time now.
